WebMpox is a rare disease caused by the mpox virus. It leads to rash and flu-like symptoms. Like the better-known virus that causes smallpox, it’s a member of the family called orthopoxvirus. Mpox was discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in groups of monkeys being used for research. The initial symptoms were similar to other viral diseases that are still extant, such as influenza and the common cold: fever of at least 38.3 °C (101 °F), muscle pain, malaise, headache and fatigue.
